Responding to the congenital syphilis crisis in Oregon
The Oregon Perinatal Collaborative is building partnerships with the Oregon Health Authority, county health departments, maternity care providers, emergency departments and other stakeholders to improve syphilis screening and treatment in pregnancy and prevent congenital syphilis. Oregon has experienced a drastic rise in congenital syphilis cases since 2014 and OPC recognizes the need for innovative responses that reach beyond hospital birthing units to respond to this emergency.
In 2023, OPC worked with the Oregon Health Authority and the Oregon STD Program to create best practice recommendations for Oregon health care providers to respond to the congenital syphilis emergency. Now, OPC is focused on projects to ensure syphilis screening reaches all pregnant people in Oregon, including those who do not access prenatal care.
